Dave Ramsey, the financial guru advises:
“When getting help with money, whether it’s insurance, real estate or investments, you should always look for someone with the heart of a teacher, not the heart of a salesman.”
Following Dave Ramsey’s advice, when looking for help with real estate or investments, go for someone with the heart of a teacher.
Education is power. You don’t want to be “sold” a house or an investment, you want to be educated by an expert in the field who will be able to review all pros and cons that may come with a certain investment or real estate deal, so you are prepared for what is to come.
Surprises for your next birthday: Good. Surprises popping up during the purchase of your next home or investment property: Bad! Being educated by an expert eliminates dangerous and upsetting surprises.
It’s like grocery shopping. There are two different types of grocery shoppers: Shopper #1 goes to the store, sees food advertised, and fills their shopping cart based on taste, presentation, and catchy advertising. Shopper #2 goes to the store prepared with a grocery list, and makes decisions between competing products by reading the nutritional facts on the box, and comparing these facts for each item they need. Bottom line, Shopper #2 is educating themselves by using the facts available for each food item. Shopper #1 is not.
Knowledge is key!
Seek someone who is interested in your specific needs and in helping you accomplish your next goal for your life, not for theirs. After working with you for a week or so, the person you are working with should be able to sit down and write a page of notes on what you are specifically looking for in your next real estate investment, why it is right for you, for you and your family’s specific needs. If they cannot do this, you probably are working with a salesman, not a teacher. Find a teacher who listens and ask questions. Don’t settle for a lowly salesman!
